Telco Loyalty Program Blueprint: Reduce Churn in the App
A four-phase lifecycle (Join, Earn, Burn, Bond) with 15 proven loyalty patterns from CEE and global operators, retail and banking apps, a 14-operator CEE scan and how to prove churn impact.
By Václav Lorenc, CEO, Byzkids | Reviewed by David Šimek, Managing Partner, Byzkids | Last updated 19 October 2026
Executive Summary
In short: a telco loyalty program works when it rewards customers in the operator's own currency (data, roaming and bill credit), creates reasons to open the app between monthly bills, and proves its effect on churn against a control group.
Situation
Mobile networks in CEE have converged on coverage and speed, so loyalty is one of the few places an operator can still feel different. Deloitte expects reward programs to matter as much as network performance by the end of 2026, and a September 2026 Circles survey found 53% of consumers in Europe's five largest markets open to switching. Yet most operator programs still pay a monthly coupon while retailers such as Lidl and Żabka run loyalty engines that earn every week, inside the app.
Solution
This blueprint maps the in-app loyalty layer of a mobile operator across four phases: Join, Earn, Burn and Bond. 15 curated patterns from operators, retailers and banks in 14 countries show what already works, and a desk scan of 14 CEE operators shows where the region stands, with CEE operators (the Magenta Moments markets, Vodafone CZ, Orange SK and PL, Telekom Slovenije) as the primary evidence. It covers loyalty design and economics; habit loops and weekly usage live in the Telco App MAU blueprint →.
How to read this blueprint
100%: what the strongest players already do. Proven concepts, ready to copy. Implement them well and you match the strongest players in the category.
130%: where we beat the market. Specific pain points and KPIs from the 100% set that Byzkids can push further for your context.
150%: where the market is heading. The trends and concepts that will define the next wave.
100%: Best Available Concepts on the Market
The framework walks the loyalty lifecycle in order. Each phase opens with its pain point, then shows the patterns that solve it.
| Phase | Pain Point | Impact | Innovations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Join | Loyalty sits outside the app or behind a sign-up form | Every member becomes an app user | 1.1 App-only perks, 1.2 Welcome balance, 1.3 Open to non-customers |
| 2. Earn | Bills arrive monthly, so members have no reason to return in between | Weekly earn moments beyond the bill | 2.1 Bill and relationship earn, 2.2 Tenure in data, 2.3 Partner-funded earn, 2.4 Usage missions, 2.5 Referral and family |
| 3. Burn | Generic vouchers feel worthless and points expire unused | Rewards that feel valuable at low unit cost | 3.1 Network currency, 3.2 Tier ladder, 3.3 Benefit picker, 3.4 Expiry and donation |
| 4. Bond | Loyalty is a discount, not a relationship | Planned spikes of visits and emotional attachment | 4.1 Moments platform, 4.2 Seasonal games, 4.3 Streaks and status |
1. Join: Enrolment and App-Only Perks
Enrolment decides whether loyalty ever moves customers into the app. Programs that sit behind a form or work the same offline give customers no reason to download anything. Making the app the only door, and paying value on the first tap, turns every member into an app user.
1.1 App-Only Perks as the Door to the App: EE, Movistar, Zoohit
When the best benefits exist only in the app, customers who want any perk migrate there on their own. The bill payment or order becomes the trigger, so a routine task turns into an app visit with visible reward progress.
What to copy:
- EE (UK): bill payment in the app unlocks data boosts and app-only perks
- Movistar (ES): every add-on, discount and partner benefit lives in the app only
- Zoohit (CZ): double points on app orders, without penalising other channels

Loyalty program in app only
by Movistar
Movistar ESP offers a loyalty program exclusively through its app. All addons, plan discounts, thirdparty programs, entertainment, and technology benefits (e.g., extra data, Disney+ activation, vouchers) are accessible only via the app.

Bill payment loyalty engine with app-only perks
by EE
EE GBR rewards customers with free boosts, discounts, or extra value when they pay and manage plans in the app. The wow factor is that routine bill payment becomes a loyalty engine with visible progress and app-only perks. This improves on-time payment and creates more cross-sell moments.

Loyalty points with double rewards for app orders
by Zoohit
Zoohit CZE launches a loyalty program called zooBody Points that rewards customers for purchases and referrals, with double points incentivizing app-based orders. Points are redeemable for a range of rewards and expire at year-end, creating urgency that drives engagement before expiry. A detailed transaction history and dedicated rewards overview give users full transparency over how points are earned, spent, or lost.
1.2 Welcome Balance at Opt-In: Octopus Energy
A program that starts at zero feels like homework. Paying a welcome balance on the opt-in screen, in the same tap as consent, makes the first redemption reachable from day one and frames joining as a gift rather than a form. Octopus Energy (UK) pays 500 points the moment the customer opts in to Octoplus.

Rewards points for shifting energy consumption habits
by Octopus Energy
Octopus Energy GBR launches Octoplus, a free opt-in rewards programme that grants users 500 Octopoints on sign-up and awards additional points for shifting energy consumption during Saving Sessions. Points convert directly into account credit at a rate of 8 points per penny, creating a tangible financial incentive for flexible, greener energy behaviour. The main differentiator is the seamless loop between demand-response participation and instant bill reduction, requiring no third-party loyalty platform.
1.3 Loyalty Open to Non-Customers: Singtel, Hrvatski Telekom
Opening an entry tier of the loyalty catalogue to non-customers turns it into an acquisition channel. Prospects build a habit with the brand's app and partners first, and the deepest perks stay behind a subscription.
What to copy:
- Singtel (SG): dining and experience deals open to non-customers in My Singtel
- Hrvatski Telekom (HR): Magenta Moments partner offers open to anyone with the Moj Telekom app, customer or not

Tiered rewards open to non-customers as acquisition
by Singtel
Singtel SGP launches a tiered rewards programme that opens select F&B deals and experience discounts to non-customers via the My Singtel app. The approach repurposes existing loyalty content as an acquisition funnel, letting prospects sample benefits before committing to a subscription. Full subscribers unlock deeper perks including 1-for-1 dining, monthly treats, and higher attraction discounts.
2. Earn: Points on Bills, Partners and Missions
Bills arrive once a month, groceries every week. A telco program that only rewards the bill gives members no reason to come back between invoices. The strongest programs pair a passive earn base (bill, tenure, services held) with active earn events beyond the bill.
2.1 Earn on the Bill and the Relationship: Telstra, Verizon
Every customer earns something every month just for paying and staying, which makes the program universal without extra effort. Scaling that earn with services held rewards convergence and makes one more line or product visibly worth it.
What to copy:
- Telstra (AU): points on every bill payment, with per-transaction earn history
- Verizon (US): 1 to 3 coins a month depending on the number of services held

Monthly rewards for multi-service customers
by Verizon
Verizon USA rewards customers monthly with 1–3 VeriCoins based on how many services they hold. Coins unlock partner discount vouchers and Device Dollars, a wow factor that turns loyalty into flexible value and makes every relationship feel more rewarding.

Tiered loyalty points earned on bill payments
by Telstra
Telstra AUS launches an in-app loyalty programme that awards points for every bill payment, with tiered status levels such as Gold unlocked by annual spend thresholds. Users can track their points balance, review per-transaction earn history, and redeem rewards directly within the app. The key differentiator is transforming routine billing interactions into an ongoing engagement loop that incentivises customers to remain active app users.
2.2 Tenure Paid in Data: GOMO, Telekom Slovenije
Rewarding tenure in the operator's own currency creates a switching cost that grows every year. Leaving means losing a data bonus or a points milestone, while the operator pays in capacity it already has.
What to copy:
- GOMO (SG): an extra 5GB every month after two years as a customer
- Telekom Slovenije (SI): 500 bonus points at five years of membership and 1,000 at ten, redeemable for mobile data, roaming or bill credit

Loyalty data plan
by GOMO
GOMO SGP rewards long-term customers with increasing data bonuses, offering surprise rewards over time and granting an extra 5GB of free data each month after two years of loyalty.
2.3 Partner-Funded Earn: Telstra, Moneta
Letting members earn on spend outside the telco creates weekly earn moments, and merchant-funded offers grow the loyalty margin because partners pay for the reward. The operator owns the moment without owning the cost.
What to copy:
- Telstra (AU): Telstra Plus points on online shopping at partner retailers
- Moneta (CZ): partner deals activated from the home screen, cashback paid on card spend

Merchant-funded cashback with partner activation
by Moneta
Moneta CZE integrated a merchant funded cashback program into its banking app, promoted directly from the home screen. Users opted in, browsed partner offers from brands like Albert, Dr.Max, Adidas, and Shell, activated individual deals, and earned rewards automatically on card payments, with a reward history showing each purchase amount and cashback earned across retailers like Kaufland, McDonald's, and Alza.cz.

Telco loyalty points earned via partner retail shopping
by Telstra
Telstra AUS launches a loyalty rewards feature within its Telstra Plus program that lets customers earn points when shopping online at partnered retailers. The program bridges telecom loyalty with e-commerce behavior, rewarding customers beyond traditional telco interactions. This positions Telstra as a lifestyle ecosystem rather than a pure connectivity provider.
2.4 Missions That Reward Usage: TextNow, Umniah
A rotating list of missions turns the behaviours an operator wants, from daily app visits to self-care actions, into earn events with progress bars. Usage itself becomes part of the earn engine instead of a side effect.
What to copy:
- TextNow (US): 3, 7, 21 and 30 day streak quests next to tasks such as making a call
- Umniah (JO): point value varies by task, so high-value actions pay more

Tiered task-based variable loyalty points system
by Umniah
Umniah JOR launches a tiered task-based loyalty points system that rewards customers with varying point amounts depending on which specific actions or tasks they complete. The program incentivizes engagement by differentiating reward values across different customer activities. This variable-reward mechanic encourages broader participation and drives targeted customer behaviors within the app.

Gamified quest streaks rewarding usage with redeemable points
by TextNow
TextNow USA launches a gamified Earn tab featuring Quests that reward users for usage streaks of 3, 7, 21, and 30 days, as well as activity-based tasks like making calls and watching ads. Progress bars keep engagement goals visible, while earned points can be redeemed for in-app upgrades such as ad removal. The key differentiator is the integration of partner Perks deals alongside native rewards, creating a loyalty loop that monetizes engagement without requiring a paid subscription.
2.5 Referral and Family Paid in Network Value: Yoodo, Setel
Paying referral and family rewards as service credit keeps the value on the network instead of leaking out as cash. Pooling family earn into one balance rewards multi-line households and locks them in together.
What to copy:
- Yoodo (MY): referral pays 7GB of data to both the referrer and the friend
- Setel (MY): Family Wallet for up to five members, with extra points when they pay

Dual-sided referral rewards 7GB free data
by Yoodo
Yoodo MYS launches a referral program that rewards both the referrer and the newly invited friend with 7GB of free data upon SIM activation. The dual-sided incentive immediately upgrades both parties' existing plans, removing the typical asymmetry where only one side benefits. This equal reward structure is designed to drive organic subscriber growth through stronger peer-to-peer motivation.

Family wallet with shared rewards and spending limits
by Setel
Setel MYS launches a Family Wallet feature allowing Mesra Rewards members to share their wallet or linked cards with up to five family members under individually set monthly spending limits. The wallet owner earns Mesra points on every family member transaction, with Hero tier members unlocking 3x point multipliers. The feature combines household spending control with a unified rewards strategy, positioning Setel as a loyalty-first fuel and payments platform.
3. Burn: Rewards, Tiers and Redemption
Redemption is where perceived value is won or lost, and research cited by BCG shows satisfaction barely tracks the monetary value of rewards. Generic vouchers feel worthless and unused points become breakage. Telco-native, instant and meaningful redemption fixes both.
3.1 Points Into Network Currency: EE, Airtel
Data boosts and bill credit cost the operator little and feel valuable to the customer, which is the core of a healthy loyalty margin. Showing the money value of points and converting them in one or two taps makes the program feel real.
What to copy:
- EE (UK): points redeemed directly for mobile data boosts
- EE (UK): partner-retail points redeemed directly against the monthly bill
- Airtel (IN): every reward shows earn date, validity and remaining uses

Loyalty points redeemable for mobile data boosts
by EE
EE GBR launches a loyalty rewards programme that grants customers points for their purchases, redeemable directly for mobile data boosts. The scheme creates a closed-loop incentive system tying spending behaviour to network benefit rewards. This differentiates EE by embedding data as a loyalty currency rather than traditional cash-back or voucher mechanics.

Retail spending earns points redeemable on phone bills
by EE
EE GBR launches a loyalty rewards programme in partnership with Airtime Rewards, allowing customers to earn points when shopping at partnered retailers. Accumulated points can be redeemed directly against monthly phone bills, reducing the amount customers pay. The key differentiator is the seamless link between everyday retail spending and telco bill savings, creating cross-industry loyalty value.

One-tap in-app rewards with transparent benefit tracking
by Airtel
Airtel IND launches a one-tap in-app rewards system offering users free data bundles and transaction discounts directly within its mobile app. Each reward displays its earn date, validity period, and remaining uses, giving customers full transparency over their benefits. App-exclusive perks such as 1 GB data bonuses incentivize regular app engagement and reinforce loyalty by rewarding users simply for staying on the network.
3.2 Tier Ladder on the Home Screen: Telstra, Magenta Telekom
A ladder gives members something to climb, but only if they can see it. Putting tier status and balance on the app home, and expressing tiers as money saved rather than abstract names, keeps the next level in view.
What to copy:
- Telstra (AU): four tiers with rising earn rates, shown on the app home
- Magenta Telekom (AT): Magenta Moments shows illustrative savings levels per month, from around €20 for a Moments Starter to up to €100 for a Moments Champion

Four-tier points loyalty program with rewards redemption
by Telstra
Telstra AUS launches a four-tier loyalty program that rewards customers with 10 to 25 Telstra Plus points per dollar spent, redeemable for phones, headphones, electronics, pre-paid cards, and discounted movie tickets. Higher-spending users unlock stronger earning rates across Member, Silver, Gold, and Business tiers, incentivising long-term engagement. The program is prominently featured on the app home screen to maintain visibility and drive ongoing participation, with points valid for three years.
3.3 Benefit Picker by Spend Level: Orange Slovensko
Letting members choose their own perk each month from a menu sized by their spend level makes the benefit fit each household instead of averaging it. Orange Slovensko (SK) Love lets converged households pick shared GB, HBO Max, TV packs or security in Môj Orange and swap monthly.

Flexible monthly loyalty tier benefit selection
by Orange Slovensko
Orange Slovensko SVK launches Love Benefits, a loyalty programme for converged households that unlocks reward tiers based on four monthly spend levels. Each tier gives users a choice between shared group data, HBO Max, TV content packs, or ESET security — selectable and swappable every month via the Môj Orange app. The key differentiator is full monthly flexibility, letting customers actively manage their bundle rather than being locked into a fixed perk.
3.4 Expiry Nudges and Donation: T-Mobile, talabat, CHOPT
Expiry should drive action, not quietly fund the program. Showing the deadline next to a ready-to-claim reward, saving favourites and offering a donation for small balances moves members from hoarding to redeeming.
What to copy:
- T-Mobile (US): saved-rewards shelf that also shows what expired
- talabat (AE): expiry warning placed right above an exclusive reward
- CHOPT (US): leftover points turned into a charity donation

Bookmark and organize rewards with expiry nudges
by T-Mobile
T-Mobile USA launches a My Stuff feature within its save rewards program, allowing customers to bookmark and organize their favorite rewards for quick retrieval. The feature also surfaces expired rewards directly in the saved view, creating a sense of urgency that nudges customers to redeem offers before they lapse. This lightweight personalization layer aims to drive higher reward engagement and reduce offer fatigue.

Points expiry notification with redemption trigger
by Talabat
Talabat ARE launches a points expiry notification embedded directly on the rewards home screen, displaying the exact number of expiring points and their expiry date above curated partner rewards such as Spotify Premium. The placement creates an immediate redemption trigger by linking urgency to desirable perks. This contextual nudge drives repeat orders and increases loyalty programme engagement by converting passive point balances into active redemptions.

Loyalty points convertible to charity donations
by Chopt
Chopt USA launches a charity redemption option within its loyalty rewards app, allowing members to convert points directly into donations to partner nonprofits — for example, 750 points equals a $5 donation. The feature sits alongside standard rewards like free menu items and discounts, making charitable giving a first-class redemption choice. The key differentiator is seamless integration of community impact into everyday dining loyalty, turning routine salad purchases into a visible social contribution.
4. Bond: Gamification, Status and Partner Ecosystem
A discount program is easy to copy and easy to leave. Bonding mechanics turn loyalty into a relationship: a partner network that changes every week, seasonal games that create planned spikes of visits, and visible status that members want to protect.
4.1 Partner Moments Platform: T-Mobile, Slovak Telekom, Orange
A broad local partner network gives members a reason to open the app every week, and partners co-fund the value. The operator's own data perks stay the hero offer inside the catalogue, and a fixed weekly drop builds the habit.
What to copy:
- T-Mobile (CZ): 2.5M vouchers from 250 partners used in year one of Magenta Moments
- Slovak Telekom (SK): own unlimited-data packs were the most used offers
- Orange (PL): new rewards every week, including a discount on the next invoice

Rewards on weekly basis
by Orange
Orange POL increases weekly app usage by providing weekly rewards to customers where they can get various discounts and perks from both Orange and third parties, incl. discount on next invoice.

Loyalty&Engagement platform
by T-Mobile
TMobile CZE announced that 2.5 million vouchers from 250 partners have been used during the first year of Magenta Moments. TMobile also offers contests during various events, and customers can purchase branded goods, such as a Magenta pan or Magenta lemonade.

Gamified hearts loyalty with 300+ partner rewards
by Slovak Telekom
Slovak Telekom SVK launches Magenta Moments, a gamified in-app loyalty program integrated into the Môj Telekom app where users collect hearts and redeem them for 400+ offers from 300 partners including Cinemax, Wolt, and Slovnaft. The program reached 500,000 users within its first year, making it one of the fastest-scaling telco loyalty initiatives in the region. Its key differentiator is the seamless blend of third-party partner rewards with Telekom's own unlimited data packs as the top-redeemed benefit.
4.2 Seasonal Games and Leaderboards: T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, Lidl
Games replace part of the material reward with fun, so they create spikes of visits at a lower cost than flat discounts. Seasonal quests send users through several app sections, and skill-based leaderboards hold attention longer than pure luck.
What to copy:
- T-Mobile (CZ): Easter quest collecting eggs across the app
- Vodafone (CZ): Happy prize wheel with interests shaping the prize pool
- Orange (SK): gift-tracker journey with rewards at each stop
- Lidl (CZ): spin and win after every purchase in Lidl Plus

Gift tracker adventure
by Orange
Orange SVK engaged users with the Darchecker game, allowing them to track gifts in a fun and interactive way. Along the journey, they could unlock cinema tickets, enjoy free TV with HBO/MAX, and find mobiles for €1.

Spin & win
by Lidl
Lidl CZE users can spin the wheel in their app after shopping to win discount coupons. The feature adapts to campaigns, like the Pilos promo, and complements existing scratch card rewards.

Spring collect quest
by T-Mobile
T-mobile CZE engages users through an Easterthemed game in the Magenta Moments app—users collect eggs to earn puzzle pieces and win rewards, boosting app interaction and seasonal fun.

Gamified loyalty program
by Vodafone
Vodafone CZE launched Happy program, a gamified loyalty program letting users spin for weekly prizes, earn personalized discounts, and choose interests for tailored reward experiences.
4.3 Streaks and Visible Status: T-Mobile, Starbucks, Globus
Visible progress gives members something to protect. Short weekly streaks gate the best rewards behind a habit rather than spend, status rings add a deadline, and personal tier rewards with countdowns beat generic coupons on relevance.
What to copy:
- T-Mobile (US): selected rewards unlock after four consecutive weekly logins
- Starbucks (US): annual status ring with the stars needed by a set date
- Globus (CZ): app-only tiers with personal rewards and expiry countdowns

Gamified tiered loyalty with personalized expiring rewards
by Globus
Globus CZE launches an app-exclusive tiered loyalty program with Bronze, Silver, and higher spending tiers that unlock personalized coupons and gifts such as free bakery packs tied to individual purchase history. Expiration countdowns on offers create urgency while a visual progress bar gamifies the path to the next reward tier. The combination of hyper-personalization and gamified progression differentiates it from standard flat discount schemes.

Streak-based login rewards unlock after four weeks
by T-Mobile
T-Mobile USA launches streak-based conditioned rewards within its T-Life app, requiring customers to log in for four consecutive weeks to unlock selected rewards. The mechanic gamifies loyalty engagement by adding a progress-tracking feature that keeps users motivated and returning to the app regularly. This approach deepens habitual app usage while differentiating T-Mobile's loyalty program through behavioral conditioning rather than simple point accumulation.

Tiered loyalty status with visual progress ring
by Starbucks
Starbucks USA launches a tiered Green/Gold loyalty status system in its rewards app, featuring a visual progress ring that shows annual Stars earned and the number still needed to reach Gold (500 Stars) before a set deadline. The clear visual countdown and time-bound goal drive repeat purchase behaviour through progress psychology. Gold status unlocks an elevated earn rate of 1.2 Stars per dollar and permanently non-expiring Stars, strengthening long-term retention.
130%: Where You Beat the Market
100% brings you level with the strongest players in the category. 130% is where you pass them. Four concepts from the framework above still leave value on the table, and each one is something we would build differently.

Loyalty program in app only
by Movistar
Movistar ESP offers a loyalty program exclusively through its app. All addons, plan discounts, thirdparty programs, entertainment, and technology benefits (e.g., extra data, Disney+ activation, vouchers) are accessible only via the app.

Points Into Network Currency | EE
Gap: every member gets the same reward regardless of usage
KPI to improve: higher retention at contract end
Partner Moments Platform | T-Mobile
Gap: broad catalogue, little personal relevance, members browse rather than redeem
KPI to improve: higher monthly active use of the rewards tab
Earn on the Bill and the Relationship | Verizon
Gap: rewards services held, never shows what one more would add
KPI to improve: more products per customer
App-Only Perks as the Door to the App | EE, Movistar
Gap: offline customers lose benefits instead of being moved into the app
KPI to improve: higher share of journey completed in-app
150%: Where the Market Is Heading
Loyalty is turning from a telco feature into a battleground between ecosystems. Three shifts follow from the patterns above.
Retail Apps Become Operators
The strongest loyalty engines in Europe earn weekly in grocery apps, and at least one of them has announced plans to sell mobile tariffs inside its loyalty app. Operators will compete with retailers whose loyalty habit already exists, and will need partnerships or co-branded programs to stay inside that weekly loop.
One Wallet Across Telco and Bank
Bill payments, card spend and partner purchases will earn into one shared balance across an operator and its banking partners. The customer sees one currency and one catalogue, and both brands share the cost and the data under one consent.
Loyalty That Redeems Itself
An in-app assistant will spend points on the customer's behalf: applying a data boost before the allowance runs out, claiming a roaming pack when a trip is detected, or donating a balance before it expires. Redemption effort drops to zero and breakage stops being a source of program funding.
CEE Telco Loyalty Scan: 14 Operators
In a desk scan of 14 mobile operators in Central and Eastern Europe (October 2026), 10 run gamified rewards in the app and 11 tie perks to the app, but only 3 award points on the monthly bill. The Deutsche Telekom markets share one app-only program, Magenta Moments, built on partner offers and games rather than bill points; the classic bill-points programs sit with Orange Romania, A1 Austria and Telekom Slovenije.

Glossary
Earn rate: How many points or how much value a member collects per unit of spend or per action.

Moments: Experience-led rewards such as event access, partner offers and seasonal games, rather than fixed discounts.
Partner earn: Points members collect on spend with partner brands outside the operator, often funded by the partner.
